I want to finish my career at Arsenal - Gilberto eyes new contract

Gilberto has revealed that he would love to be offered a new contract by Arsenal and finish his career at the club.

The Brazil captain admits he is "uncomfortable" with his diminished status at Emirates Stadium, although he has put a decision on his future on the back burner while he attempts to win back his place.

Rare start: But Gilberto wants to stay with Arsenal in the long term

Gilberto made a rare start last night as a much-changed Arsenal team ground out a drab 0-0 draw at Slavia Prague to guarantee qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

As was revealed last week, the midfielder is privately pondering his future after being relegated to the bench for much of this season, a snub that could eventually pave the way for his departure.

Gilberto, whose contract ends in 18 months, admits he is not sure whether Arsene Wenger believes he has a long-term future at Arsenal.

"I don't know. It is not just down to me," he said. "It would be great if I extend my contract with the club and finish my career here. We will see if the club has the same feeling.

"I'm not thinking about leaving the club now. I prefer to think I have the [ability] to get back in the team. But my situation is not very comfortable on the bench."

Despite his bit-part role, the 31-year-old Brazilian, who has been linked with Juventus and Valenica, has been angered by reports of a fall-out with Wenger.

He added: "This is not true. We have a great respect for each other."
