I was cut out to be a Blade, says Robson

Bryan Robson has stoked up the Sheffield derby by expressing his delight that he ended up managing United rather than impoverished rivals Wednesday.

Robson could have been taking charge of Wednesday against United on Saturday had chairman Dave Allen not preferred Brian Laws.

Feeling at home: Robson is glad he ended up at United rather than Wednesday

Fourteen months on, both Sheffield bosses are under pressure to deliver with United expecting a belated promotion challenge and Wednesday anxious to escape the Championship's drop zone.

But Robson would not swap the sequence of events that saw him installed at Bramall Lane last summer. 'I'd much sooner be manager of this club than Sheffield Wednesday because of the structure of the two clubs at this time,' he said, referring to the £26million debt at Hillsborough.

Wednesday let it be known last season that Laws was their clear choice but Robson has a slightly different version, saying: 'I had an interview with the chairman and it wasn't the challenge I wanted at the time.'

Wednesday have paid £15,000 for the hire of a pitch cover to ensure the game beats the weather. Hillsborough's sodden surface — waterlogged on Tuesday when the FA Cup replay with Derby was postponed — is sweating out a week of incessant rain in the build-up to the game.
