I will deliver, says upbeat Sanchez
17 July 2007
The manager has told chairman Mohamed Fayed the club will improve on their 16th-placed finish last term, which ended with Fulham just one point above the Premiership drop zone.
Positive thinking: Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez
Fayed has responded by giving the former Northern Ireland manager the type of financial backing often denied his predecessor Chris Coleman.
Sanchez has spent £17.5million on a quartet of Irishmen he knows well from his successful spell in charge of the national side - David Healy, Steven Davis, Aaron Hughes and Chris Baird - as well as Senegal striker Diomansy Kamara and former West Ham left-back Paul Konchesky.
"I've promised him [Fayed] we'll do better than last season," said Sanchez. "He's spent money this summer and it's my job to deliver.
"We avoided relegation by one place and point last year. We don't want to be in that situation again. If we're going to stay here and get £30m or more each year from being in the Premiership then we need stay there.
"We've paid acceptable transfer fees and if these players do the job then next year we'll look back and say they were value for money."
Sanchez says he expects Fulham to punch above their weight this season and has nominated Reading and Blackburn as the type of over-achieving small clubs he hopes they can emulate.
He added: "I take my hat off to Steve Coppell and Mark Hughes. They run smaller clubs with great winning mentalities.
"There has been a happy-to-be-in-the-Premiership mentality at Craven Cottage. My job is to beat our best Premiership finish of ninth and I'd like to get Fulham into Europe."
Sanchez confirmed that he hoped to sign "one or two" more players before the end of the transfer window, with QPR's left-winger Lee Cook believed to be top of his shopping list.
Franck Queudrue will be allowed to leave if a club can match Fulham's £3m valuation of the left back.
