I will never quit Spurs, insists defiant Jol
24 October 2007
Martin Jol insisted today he had the full support of all the officials at the club and that he would 'never' quit White Hart Lane.
The Tottenham boss has seen his team struggle this season in which they have won only one Premier League match.
Their meek defeat at Newcastle on Monday left Spurs third bottom of the table and many fans have started to turn against him.
Jol's team face Getafe in the UEFA Cup tomorrow night and then Blackburn, also at home, in the Premier League on Sunday. Any negative result in those two matches could see the Dutchman sacked, with Rovers boss Mark Hughes now high on the wish-list of the Tottenham hierarchy.
But Jol insisted: "I have got the full support of all the directors and the chairman [Daniel Levy]. But the chairman is worried. He was worried at the start of the season. If you are not in the top four in the league and are maybe eighth or ninth, then you are also going to be worried.
"I feel that the younger players are performing well. As long as we can perform at 100 per cent then we'll be okay. We just have to convince the players to perform to that level."
Despite his protests, the board remain indecisive over whether to sack Jol and install a caretaker manager for fear it could make the situation worse, but they seem to have lost their faith in the Dutchman.
Jol has also began to have problems with his players with star striker Dimitar Berbatov refusing three times to warm up before coming on as a substitute at Newcastle.
Jol denied he has lost the dressing room and when asked if he will resign, he said today: "No, never. We are all in the same position and we have to get out of it together.
"I don't have to convince anybody that I am the right man. The only one I have to convince is myself. People have said that the chairman spoke to me after we lost to Newcastle but the last time I spoke to him was last week and we still get on.
"Me and Dimitar are friends and I talk to him all the time. There is no problem with him and he is not stalling over a new contract.
"He starts 95 per cent of the games and there is no issue for me. What has happened over the last three months has pulled all of us closer together. The players have to be better but I won't blame them as long as their mentality is good.
"I was angry with Michael Dawson for his performance on Monday and I told him so and that he should be angry with himself."
Jol also came under fire from former midfielder Tim Sherwood who claimed that he hasn't been working with his players hard enough on the training ground.
But Jol added: "He (Sherwood) doesn't know what he is talking about. I'm working with the players all the time."
Meanwhile Jol has been boosted by the news that defender Gareth Bale has not suffered a broken foot and should return to the first team in a few weeks.
Jol feared the left-back had suffered a serious injury at Newcastle, but today said: "If everything is fine he will only be out for around 10 days."
