I won't change my bowling action, insists Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff last night said he has no intention of changing his bowling action, despite claims by England bowling coach Allan Donald that he must do so to prevent future injuries.

The Lancashire all-rounder stepped up his comeback from ankle surgery yesterday by claiming three for 38 on day one of the Roses match against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Staying the same: Flintoff

While the 29-year-old's efforts mean he is on course to play in the one-day NatWest Series against India, starting in 11 days, safeguarding his long-term fitness is the primary objective. Donald suggested at the weekend that Flintoff should alter the position of his left foot in the delivery stride, saying: "His front foot points inwards and then he twists over it and it turns straight as he goes over the top. Therefore there is counter-thrusting, where bone and muscle are working against each other, so it could be a long-term worry.

"He talked to me during the Old Trafford Test, when he was still on crutches, and asked whether we needed to work on getting his front foot straight. It's a major issue that could creep up again in the future."

But Flintoff responded by dismissing the former South Africa fast bowler's concerns, saying: "I'm happy with the way I bowl. Three years ago my foot was probably a lot more closed in the delivery stride than it is now. I'm 29 and it would take a lot to change things now.

"One thing we have looked at is footwear to allow my feet to move in the way they do. I need boots that work with, that rather than fight, it.

"I'm playing a full part in this match, batting at five and bowling as many overs as the captain asks of me. "There's still a little more in me and I can bowl faster, but on this wicket it's about building pressure."
