I'll be back, insists axed Reds coach

Karl Harrison, sacked after five years at Salford, said: "I haven't become a bad coach overnight and I'll be back."

The former England chief, who was the longest-serving coach in Super League, was shown the door six months after signing a new three-year contract.

Harrison, 43, took Salford to the play-offs for the first time last season but paid the price for their slump to the foot of the table.

Steve Simms, the Reds' director of rugby, will take charge of the squad for Friday's home game against Huddersfield, with Harrison's No 2 James Lowes and former Hull and St Helens coach Shaun McRae among the frontrunners to take the job on a permanent basis.

Harrison added: "It is a results-based business and the chairman has decided to make a change. I've left on amicable terms and will stay in the game."

Meanwhile, St Helens have extended the contracts of Great Britain stars Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham for two years and one year respectively.

They have also signed Samoan prop Maurie Fa'asavalu and rising star Scott Moore for a further three years.
