I’ll carry the water but I’m thirsty to play, says Sculthorpe

With a bit of luck I will be back in the action again at Old Trafford tomorrow night when we — St Helens — take on Leeds in the 10th Super League Grand Final.

No, I'm not about to make a shock comeback after rupturing my achilles tendon four months ago but I am hoping our coach Daniel Anderson lets me get involved as a water carrier.

I couldn't even do that in August when Saints beat the Catalans in the first Challenge Cup Final at the new Wembley. I wasn't able to run then. I can now.

And I'll certainly be celebrating with my Saints team-mates if they complete an historic second successive Grand Slam and make it five wins out of five in Grand Finals.

I played in the first three and was given a fourth Grand Final gold ring last year because I had played in 17 Super League games before another knee injury ended my season. But I gave it back because I didn't feel I'd earned it.

I wouldn't want one this year either but I have just signed a new contract with Saints and, hopefully, there will be more finals to come.

It's tough having to sit out a second successive Grand Final and I have been very envious of the lads preparing for what should be one of the best ever.

The qualifying semi final against Leeds at Knowsley Road was awesome and tomorrow's showpiece should be every bit as good, if not better.

Saints and the Rhinos have proved themselves to be the two best teams in Super League by finishing first and second over the regular season.

And after that amazing semi final, I was pretty sure they would be meeting again at Old Trafford.

The forward battle holds the key and it's up to our big guys like Nick Fozzard and Jason Cayless to come out on top against the likes of Jamie Peacock and Jamie Jones-Buchanan.

This time last year "Fozz" must have been as disappointed as me. He didn't make the Saints line-up for either the Challenge Cup Final or the Grand Final but he has bounced back and been absolutely sensational this year —he tore his biceps a few weeks ago but refused the surgery that would have cost him the chance of playing at Old Trafford.

We'll also have Sean Long back alongside Leon Pryce at half back and they can do just as much, if not more, damage in broken play as Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow can for Leeds.

The kicking game will be crucial and we have got to keep the ball on the grass and away from Leeds' Kiwi Test full back Brent Webb. But we've got the best full back in the business in Paul Wellens.

This match should be a classic but, to be honest, I'll be glad when it's all over.

Then, at least, I'll be the same as the other Saints lads. Ready for a short break followed by a full pre-season.

But I want to see our ribbons on the trophy again first.
