I'm not trying to humiliate Jens - Wenger

Arsene Wenger named veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann on the bench against Slavia Prague, which marked the German's return following a lay-off that the outspoken gloveman said he has found "humiliating".

The Arsenal manager nonetheless maintained: "There is no purpose to humiliate anybody. I have said many times that I respect him a lot.

"That is how he experiences things, but that is not my purpose at all. We have had chats about that already.

"What is important tonight is to praise the players who have done well - and 60,000 people go home happy, having watched good football."

"There is fierce competition for places in every position at every big club; once the team comes out, that competition has to stop.

"Certainly there is a good possibility the team will be changed for Sunday."

Lehmann was left out of the Arsenal squad in the Premier League against Bolton last Saturday.

"It's possible that some day I'll feel like talking about the whole issue," Lehmann told German TV.

"But at the moment I'm just swallowing it all as part of the humiliation. That's something one has to take in. But I think - and this is aimed at my dear manager - one shouldn't humiliate players for too long."
