Injury may force Rose to give up pursuit of Els

Justin Rose faces an injury dilemma this morning which seriously threatens his chances of beating Ernie Els in the race to be crowned Europe's No 1.

Last weekend Rose suffered a recurrence of the back problem which forced him to miss 12 weeks of golf earlier this year.

Injury woe: Justin Rose

And while Els has finished his European Tour programme with a £50,000 lead over Padraig Harrington at the top of this year's money list, third-placed Rose has allowed himself two extra tournaments in which to make up his own £172,000 deficit.

But the back injury which left him unable to move for five minutes last Saturday could yet force him to withdraw from the Portuguese Masters, which starts today.
