Injury-plagued Owen forced to stay at Newcastle as transfer window closes on him before it even opens

Michael Owen's failure to recover from his latest injury is likely to scupper Newcastle's plans to sell the striker in the January transfer window.

Owen, 28, will not play at Derby on Sunday, and has not featured in a Barclays Premier League game since picking up a thigh injury playing for England in Austria on November 16.

Owen: Sitting out for a prolonged period

He has an outside chance of returning for Newcastle's game with Wigan on Boxing Day, but there remain fitness doubts about a player who has started just 21 games since his move to St James' Park from Real Madrid twoanda-half years ago.

Owen will be needed in January to replace Obafemi Martins, who is on duty for Nigeria at the African Nations Cup, but that will still leave him little time to prove his fitness to any suitors.

Newcastle have received little interest so far and with the club looking to recoup something in the region of £8million, it seems unlikely he will be leaving Tyneside until the summer at the earliest.

There have been no talks over extending a deal that runs out in 18 months and Newcastle fear losing him for nothing after so far shelling out about £30m on him.
