Irish plan new deal for Worthington

Nigel Worthington is in line for a new contract from Northern Ireland even if they lose against Spain tomorrow and fail to qualify for Euro 2008.

Worthington's short-term managerial deal ends after the match, but his spell in charge has impressed the Irish Football Association.

"Do I think he can do the job on a permanent basis? Without doubt," said the IFA chief executive, Howard Wells. "I believe every international manager needs at least two tournaments to prove they can do it.

"But we've decided not to discuss it further until after the Spain game. Nigel came in a difficult time, he picked up the baton and moved it on."

Worthington took over from Lawrie Sanchez last June and has been in charge for the last five qualifiers.

"We respect the job Lawrie did as he laid the foundations to move forward," added Wells. "To take over in the middle of the campaign is difficult, but I was under no doubt when I met Nigel that he was the man to do it.

"If the fans had known that with one game to go we'd still be in contention, they, like us, would have been delighted."

Irish hopes of qualifying remain extremely unlikely but victory in Las Palmas, together with a home defeat for Sweden against Latvia, would see them sneak into the second qualification spot.

Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is set to feature for a Spanish side, who despite already qualifying, are determined to make up for their shock 3-2 defeat to Northern Ireland earlier in the campaign.

Meanwhile, the IFA are calling on UEFA to reward David Healy for breaking Davor Suker's 12-year scoring record of 12 goals in a European Championship qualifying campaign.
