Irish ready to offer Staunton a pay-off

Moves will be made this week to offer Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton a £200,000 pay-off before the final Euro 2008 qualifier in Wales.

Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney, and the majority of the board which will meet in Dublin on November 14 to officially discuss Staunton's future, had intended to stand by their man for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The dismal showing against Cyprus on Wednesday and the derisive verdict of 45,000 fans have forced the 10-man committee to reconsider Staunton's position.

The manager is desperate to hang on to his job for the Wales clash, and insists that he retains the players' support but views of senior internationals are already being sought.

Delaney is also facing calls to step down, but the UEFA committee man has little or no opposition within the FAI and will still be on the three-man executive committee seeking a replacement.

There is no obvious successor to Staunton but the list of possible candidates includes David O'Leary, Peter Reid, Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder, Paul Jewell, John Aldridge and Terry Venables.
