Israel can exploit Russia's travel sickness, says Owen

Michael Owen believes he has seen enough potential weaknesses in Russia's team to give England hope that their Euro 2008 hopes will still be alive after this weekend.

The Newcastle striker has always qualified with England for the finals of the major tournaments since he burst upon the international scene during the 1998 World Cup in France.

That record may end within the next six days, but Owen still believes that Israel's proud home record, plus Russia's fallibility on their travels, could still see England going into next week's final qualification match at home to Croatia with hopes of making next summer's Finals.

"Russia were a good team at Wembley, but we managed to put three past them," said Owen, "Russia are certainly a decent side but I saw enough against them, especially in the match at Wembley and again in Moscow, to believe that Israel will give them trouble.

"They don't seem quite so good away from home which gives us hope. Israel also have a great home record and they will be looking to use that to their advantage.

"I wasn't in Tel Aviv when we drew with them because I was injured but I know it's an intimidating place to go. We're definitely pinning our hopes on that game more than the other one on Saturday, because Croatia only need a point against Macedonia.

"For me though, it's Israel's home record plus Russia's possible frailty away from home which will give us hope."

Meanwhile, some members of the England ladies football team have had to take second jobs after returning from the World Cup in China out of pocket.

Team members were dismayed to find that they were paid only £2100 each - roughly £40 a day - by the FA for the tournament.
