It was hell watching 'The Devil' but I did learn a thing or two

Watching the Track Cycling World Championships wasn't easy. I really wanted to be one of the riders hurtling around the track in Apeldoorn but, instead, I was on the sofa at my parents' house nursing a side strain.

I knew something wasn't right when I was training. As a cyclist, you're used to riding with pain sometimes but this was different and the doctors ordered me off the bike for nine days.

My first day back on the bike was Saturday, which, ironically, was also day one of the omnium in Holland.

While it was painful viewing, I felt it was important to watch the Worlds as my team-mates were in action. I did a bit of shouting at the TV, particularly in the events I would have been doing.

Being out injured is never nice but there were positives as I got to look at the omnium in a different light.

For example, take the elimination race - also known as 'The Devil'. Girls that win that tend to lead from the front and that's where I always like to be but that didn't seem the case this time. The ones riding at the back had quite a lot of success so I might go for a new tactic next time.

I was gutted to have spent so much of this year focusing on the track and then not be able to compete in the biggest event of the lot. It felt like all that training had been a big waste of time.

But it's best not to dwell on it for long and, as I said, there were positives. It was nice to be back at my parents' house and to get looked after. My gran decided I was unwell so baked me a cheesecake while I had time to catch up with my sister, who's pregnant with her first child.

It'll be a first grandchild for my mum and dad and I know they're pleased but you wouldn't necessarily say they were excited. You'd have to meet my parents to know what I mean - they're just not very excitable people!

Unfortunately, I didn't get to catch up with my friends too much as most are at university. However, I did go out once and although they understand I can't have a big night out, they still laugh at me sitting there sipping my orange juice.

Going back to the Worlds, a lot was made of Team GB winning just one gold compared to Australia's eight but I'm not worried about how we as a team will perform at London 2012.

I know riders like Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton are constantly asked about next year's Games and the challenge of staying at the top.

The pressure on those guys is immense and they have so much more to contend with compared with before Beijing. That can't be easy but I'm confident they'll get it right in time for London, and I hope to as well.

I've decided to make my comeback at the Ronde van Drenthe on April 16 and, after the setbacks on the track, my focus now is to win the road race at the World Championships in Copenhagen in September.

It's a sprinter's course but it's windy and has a slightly uphill finish so, as one of the smaller sprinters, it plays into my hands. I want to win there and lay down a marker for the road race in 2012 which is a very similar course.
