I've let my Everton players down by not strengthening the squad, says Moyes

By JOHN EDWARDS

David Moyes opened up on transfer torment and admitted: ‘I’ve let my players down.’

After finishing fifth in the Barclays Premier League last season, and securing a place in the UEFA Cup, Moyes launches a new campaign today without a single addition to a squad already depleted by injuries and Olympic call-ups.

He revealed he will have to draft in Academy players to fill the bench for the visit of Blackburn and described his summerlong quest for signings as the most frustrating
spell of his career.

The Everton manager was more concerned about the feelings of others, though, as he reflected on his fruitless search and bluntly conceded he had failed those already at Goodison Park.

‘I am loyal to our supporters and people at the club but more than anything I am loyal to the players,’ he said. ‘We have built up a really happy relationship and strong
spirit and I desperately want them to succeed.

‘If they are going to do that I have to help them by bringing in new players who will strengthen the side and give us a better chance of closing the gap on those above us and being in Europe every season. That hasn’t happened this summer and I feel I have let them down.

‘At the end of last season I wouldn’t have thought it possible we would be sitting here in August without a single new face.

‘It hasn’t been for the want of trying and I have to say the chairman, Bill Kenwright, has been fantastic. No-one has worked harder to get players in but it just hasn’t
happened yet.

'There are all sorts of reasons for it and some must remain private. But there aren’t many clubs looking to sell players at the moment, and certainly some people who have been brokering deals for us have let us down quite badly.’

Moyes has not given up hope of signing new players before the end of August and said it will have no impact on his personal situation.

‘I still hope to resolve everything with the club and sign a new contract,’ he added.
