Jagielka fee saga ready to drag on

David Moyes faces a summer of hard bargaining to land Phil Jagielka — even though Sheffield United's England B international insists that Everton are the only club he is prepared to join.

Middlesbrough and Wigan have both told Bramall Lane they will pay more than Moyes' £4 million offer for Jagielka, who was released from Goodison as a youngster at the same time as Joey Barton.

Not a done deal: Phil Jagielka only wants to move to Everton, however

But Jagielka believes Everton, who are in the UEFA Cup next season, present a better chance of winning trophies than Boro or Wigan, whose package would include at least one player in part-exchange.

New United boss Bryan Robson, who is now resigned to losing Jagielka to Goodison, wants to include Everton's Scotland defender Gary Naysmith in a deal that might take until next month.

Moyes is only willing to pay £2.5m for Jagielka if he has to include Naysmith, who cost £1.75m from Hearts in 2000, but Robson will demand a lower valuation of the Scot, who is 29 in November.

The pair have plenty of time to haggle — relegated United's priority is to discover their Premiership fate, which hangs initially on an arbitration panel headed by Lord Justice Ottan, in London, on June 18.

As Sportsmail revealed yesterday, Carlos Tevez's adviser Kia Joorabchian could appear on United's behalf as they argue West Ham should be docked points rather than fined for breaking the transfer rules.

Jagielka still wants to leave even if Sheffield beat the drop — but the £4m escape clause in his contract would not be triggered if they stay up, enabling the club to demand around £6m for the 24-year-old.

Meanwhile, Mark Schwarzer has raised doubts about his Middlesbrough future after criticising the club for letting Mark Viduka move to Newcastle.

Viduka completed his protracted move to St James' and Schwarzer, who was linked with a move to Germany last year, said: "It always does put a seed in your mind, an element of doubt. I'm disappointed with not keeping him, but whether or not I'm going to look at my future now is another thing."
