James wins his battle with his 'nemesis' Owen

Michael Owen left Portsmouth cursing David James and the fluke save that denied him his fifth goal in five Newcastle games. "Call that a save?" said Owen. "If he'd had a skinhead, it would have gone in."

There were 19 minutes left in an awfully dull affair when the ball fell to Owen, six yards out. The Newcastle skipper smashed it goalwards but it clipped James on the top of the head and flew over.

"I can't repeat what Michael said," chuckled James, who consoled his England team-mate with a friendly bear hug. 'It was something about being a lucky so-and-so.

"I like Michael, but he has been my nemesis in the past."

It was Portsmouth's fourth clean sheet on the bounce and 22nd of the season, 20 of them from James, who has been named on the shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year.

Owen played again in a deeper position behind strikers Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins and ahead of a midfield trio of Nicky Butt, Joey Barton and Geremi.

Kevin Keegan insists Owen's role in the 'hole' has 'freshened him up' but Pompey manager Harry Redknapp warned it will not help his chances of getting back in the England team.

"I don't see that being his position in the long term," said Redknapp. "If you asked me if I see him playing there for England, I wouldn't."

Keegan spoke to Owen last week about a new contract and is convinced the England striker will commit his future to Tyneside. Keegan said: 'We want him and I think he wants to stay. He's enjoying his football at Newcastle. Is he totally committed? Yes with a capital Y.'
