Jewell added to the Republic shortlist

Former Wigan boss Paul Jewell has been added to the list of candidates to replace Steve Staunton as Republic of Ireland manager.

FAI officials hope to meet him once they have finished their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign against Wales on Saturday.

England No 2 Terry Venables, former Arsenal manager George Graham and Graeme Souness and Gerard Houllier, who both managed Liverpool, are also contenders.

Irish officials could face a tough task convincing Jewell to take the £1million-a-year job as he looks to return to football management.

Jewell, 43, ruled himself out a return to Wigan this week, six months after quitting the club.

He was offered £40,000 a week by chairman Dave Whelan, with an additional £1m bonus to keep Wigan in the Premier League, but said: 'The offer was a fantastic one but it would have been wrong to go back just for the money.'

Although an international role might suit Jewell, a return to the involvement of daily club management could be more to his liking after a six-month break from the game.

Jewell, who kept Bradford and Wigan in the Premier League on tight budgets, will undoubtedly be linked with Birmingham now Whelan is on the brink of persuading Steve Bruce to leave St Andrew's.

Caretaker Don Givens is in charge for Ireland's qualifier in Cardiff, after which senior members of the squad will discuss Staunton's replacement with FAI officials.

The players, such as captain Robbie Keane, vice-captain Shay Given and the experienced Kevin Kilbane, Steve Finnan and John O'Shea, are expected to be asked for their thoughts on who to approach.

Manchester United defender O'Shea said: 'Wewant someone who is hungry to succeed and to get us to the World Cup Finals. We need someone to bring fresh ideas in and a bit of Lady Luck.'
