Jewell in talks with Giles over Irish job

Giles has been hired as one of the headhunters by the FA of Ireland, who are looking for a replacement for Steve Staunton — sacked after last month's home draw with Cyprus.
Wanted: Paul Jewell
Although Jewell has not been offered the job, he has been asked to keep his options open, particularly if a vacancy such as the Birmingham job becomes available.
Jewell, who has turned down the Wigan and Preston jobs this week, is known to prefer a return to club management following his six-month break from the game, but he has left the door open on taking the Ireland job.
If he remains sufficiently interested, Jewell will meet more senior officials within the FAI, who are hoping to have the new man in place before the end of the year.
Jewell said: 'John Giles asked to see me and I met him. We had a great chat about football in general and, of course, he mentioned the Irish job situation.
'But it was not an interview. I am flattered by the interest and I am certainly not ruling it out. I am thinking about it and we will see soon whether anything develops.'
Other names in the frame are England No 2 Terry Venables and former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier. Giles is likely to meet them next week.
Midfielder Andy Reid has welcomed FAI plans to meet senior Republic players before an appointment is made.
Reid, who is set to earn his 23rd cap against Wales tomorrow, said: 'Seeking the opinions of senior players can only help in the selection process.'
