The six-time Crucible finalist was always up against it after falling 5-1 behind to world 44 Doherty, the 1997 world champion.
White went into the final session 6-3 down - but lost four more frames in a row to bow out to the 1997 world champion.
The 47-year-old had shown glimpses of his best with a 103 break in the early session but Doherty took a convincing lead and never looked back.
Dublin's Doherty, who lost in last year's qualifiers to end a 15-year run at Sheffield, faces Joe Swail on Monday for a place in this year's betfred-sponsored event.
