Jockey 'steaming' after fading Kauto Star loses again

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls admitted on Thursday night that jockey Ruby Walsh was 'steaming' with him after a tactical disagreement contributed to Kauto Star's second successive defeat on the opening day of Aintree's Grand National meeting.

Walsh had been expected to adopt patient tactics on Kauto Star in the totesport Bowl Chase but challenged the front-running Our Vic — the eventual winner — with over a circuit to go.

Blundering favourite: Kauto Star ploughs through the second last fence

An horrendous blunder two fences out stopped the 4-7 favourite in his tracks and an exhausted Kauto Star was unable to fend off the rallying 9-1 winner, who beat him a nose.

Walsh's thunderous expression as he returned told its own story and Nicholls said: 'I told Ruby to ride him positively but he came back in and said he should have held on to him. I was probably wrong to tell him to do that. He is steaming with me.'

The defeat was costly for one punter who had put £250,000 on Kauto Star.

Kauto Star's setback following last month's Cheltenham Gold Cup defeat by his stablemate Denman saw his odds to regain the Cup stretched to 7-1.
