Joe Kinnear hails Steven Gerrard after Toon double

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear today hailed the display of Steven Gerrard as Liverpool opened up a three-point gap at the top of the table with a 5-1 win at St James Park.

The Reds skipper scored twice to the delight of a watching manager Rafael Benitez, who left Robbie Keane sitting on the bench despite the continued absence of Fernando Torres.

Kinnear said: "I probably saw the best performance from a player I have seen in a long time from Gerrard. He was magnificent."

Sami Hyypia, Ryan Babel and Xavi Alonso - with a penalty - completed the scoring and Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee said: "We are pleased, but we will analyse the performance. The nature of this club is to have a look at what we need to improve upon - and there are elements that we need to improve."
