John McEnroe: 'Scary' move will suit Andy Murray

John McEnroe was surprised Andy Murray named Ivan Lendl as his coach but thinks his old rival may be the missing ingredient the Briton needs.

World No4 Murray, who won his opening tournament of the year in Brisbane, has been runner-up in three Grand Slam finals, including at the last two Australian Opens.

Lendl lost his first four Grand Slam finals before going on to win eight major titles and McEnroe said today: "I hate to give credit to Lendl but [Murray] needed to do something out of the ordinary instead of going with the predictable re-tread. This is definitely something that was, to me, unexpected. I didn't know that Lendl wanted to coach. He could bring something to the table.

"Lendl didn't win a Major until he was 24 and guess what? Murray is 24 right now. So that could provide something for Murray."

McEnroe, who won seven Grand Slam titles, had a fierce and unfriendly playing rivalry with Lendl, who he once described as a "scary robot".

Murray was today named as the fourth seed for the Australian Open, which starts next Monday. The seedings go with world rankings, meaning the top seeds are Serbian Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark.

Australia's Sam Stosur crashed out of the Sydney International today and admitted the pressure of playing in front of home crowds was getting to her.

The world No6 lost 6-2, 6-4 to Italian Francesca Schiavone and said: "You do all the work leading up and you feel okay and then today all of a sudden it's just like a bombshell hits you.

"The whole emotional side of things really took over."
