Johnson appoints Aussie Smith as England's attack coach

England supremo Martin Johnson has finally landed Brian Smith to be his attack coach. More than a month's haggling between the RFU and London Irish over compensation for their director of rugby will end with confirmation of the 41-year-old Australian's appointment with immediate effect.

Smith, who will be hired on the same long-term contract as Johnson through to the end of the next World Cup in October 2011, will join forces with the former England captain for the first time in 17 years.

England's all-powerful team manager-cum-head coach and his new right-hand man were last on the same side in 1991 at Leicester before Smith, then combining studies at Oxford University with the role of stand off for Ireland, left to embark on a career in Australian rugby league.

Toby Booth, London Irish's highly regarded forwards coach, will succeed Smith, with Mike Catt assuming more responsibility as backs coach. Despite that and the fact that he will be 37 in September, the Premiership's senior professional is preparing to play on as fly half cover for Shane Geraghty while the 21-year-old pursues his England ambitions as a member of their elite squad.

South Africa captain John Smit has accused rugby's judiciary of allowing the All Blacks to get away with the equivalent of blue murder. His outburst was prompted by New Zealand lock Brad Thorn's escape with a one-match ban for a dangerous tackle which has put hooker Smit out of Saturday's return Test in Dunedin. Smit's complaint will strike a sympathetic chord with the Lions, who lost Brian O'Driscoll in similar circumstances in Christchurch three years ago.
