Johnson has faith in Palace old boy running the line

Former Crystal Palace player Darren Cann has been selected as one of the assistant referees as Neil Warnock's side attempt to overcome a 2-1 deficit against Bristol City in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.

Cann was shown the door at Selhurst Park in 1987 and said recently: "By the look on manager Steve Coppell's face I knew I wasn't going to get a contract."

After going on to officiate at amateur level, he was promoted to the Premier League list in 2005 and has been selected, along with Tuesday night's referee Howard Webb and assistant referee Mike Mullarkey, as England's representatives in the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland next month.

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson insisted he has no qualms about Cann's selection, although he was interested to hear about his Palace past. He said: "I trust referee Howard Webb and I trust the officials who have been selected."

Despite being a respected assistant referee, Cann's career has not been without controversy. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger branded him "a liar" when Webb consulted him before sending off Emmanuel Adebayor for punching Chelsea's Frank Lampard in the 2007 Carling Cup Final.

Palace manager Neil Warnock is never too far away from a refereeing controversy but he was more focused on mind games with his opposite number Johnson. Warnock suggested City may slip up because they have to decide whether to protect their advantage or go for the kill.

"It's a very different ball game for them now they need a draw," said Warnock. "It's quite simple for us. We have to win."
