winger Adam Johnson admits he is ready to leave the club to play regular first-team football.
The 21-year-old midfielder faces a battle winning a place at Boro with Stewart Downing set to start the season on the left side of Gareth Southgate's midfield.
He impressed in last week's matches in Portugal and Southgate has said he can see the former Academy player from Easington playing on the right.
Leaving? Midfielder Adam Johnson says he may seek a move from the Riverside.
Southgate sold another local product Lee Cattermole to Wigan this week but with Boro blocking a loan move to Rangers already, and Tottenham long-term admirers of the England youth player, Southgate may have a battle keeping him happy on Teesside.
Johnson said: 'I don’t want to leave. This is the team I want to play for week-in, week-out. But if that’s not going to happen then I’m not scared to leave, like Lee has.
'All I want to do is play football. I want to be in the team and showing people what I can do, what I am all about.'
