Johnson rasps one like Radford to sink Tranmere

Simon Johnson rolled back the years in more ways than one as his second-half wonder strike sent Hereford into the FA Cup fourth round for the first time since 1992.

The former Leeds winger, who lost his way after being released from Elland Road, found a route to goal with a superb 71st-minute winner in this third-round replay.

Johnson celebrates his winner

Johnson, who has just been handed his third short-term contract which will keep him in employment until the end of the season, darted inside two defenders before drilling home a magnificent 25-yard strike to earn a home tie against Cardiff.

Boss Graham Turner claimed the goal was worthy of a club's past FA Cup glories of 36 years ago when Ronnie Radford and Ricky George put Newcastle to the sword at Edgar Street.

He said: 'I don't know about hitting them like that every day in training — but it was a cracking finish.

'Simon is repaying us for the deal we have given him to the end of the season.

'Some players go into the comfort zone when that happens but clearly Simon has not.

'Things didn't happen quite right for him at Leeds but he clearly has not lost his ability.'

Johnson's goal apart, Hereford really only enjoyed one other opportunity of note when Theo Robinson saw his header brilliantly palmed over by Tranmere keeper Danny Coyne.

It was a different story at the other end with Calvin Zola forced to endure a miserable night.

Home keeper Wayne Brown denied him twice in one-on-one situations and the striker also saw his secondhalf effort crash against the bar.

As Tranmere pushed forward in the dying stages former England Under 21 international Trevor Benjamin struck the post with a header.

Turner added: 'We rode our luck on one or two occasions but Johnson's finish was outstanding and deserved to be the winning goal.'
