Johnson's absence in friendly adds fuel to the fire as Fulham get ready

Andy Johnson was conspicuous by his absence at Preston, fuelling speculation about his imminent £10.5million move to .

The England striker went to Deepdale with but left after manager David Moyes did not even name him among six substitutes.

A for Adios: Andy Johnson looks likely to be leaving Goodison Park after missing Everton's friendly win at Preston.

Johnson was the club's record £8.6m signing when he joined from Crystal Palace May 2006.

He has scored 22 goals in 74 games but, despite the player's assurances that he is settled on Merseyside, talk of a transfer has been constant.

Moyes returned to the club he left six years ago and was reunited with Preston boss Alan Irvine, his No 2 at Everton until November.

Everton had only three men in their side who are likely to kick off the new campaign - Phil Neville, Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott. Everton won 1-0 with Jagielka scoring after seven minutes, meeting a corner from teenager Jose Baxter to power home a header just a minute after Baxter's free-kick had hit the bar.

Mikel Arteta played the last half-hour as he seeks fitness after abdominal problems.

It was a night of mixed fortunes for Barclays Premier League new boys and in their friendlies.

Hull eased to a 3-0 victory at Chesterfield with goals from Geovanni, Dean Windass and Caleb Folan, while West Bromwich were held to a 2-2 draw at Shrewsbury.

Peter Halmosi, Hull's £2million signing from Plymouth last week, started the game at Saltergate, but it was another newcomer in the form of Brazilian Geovanni who opened the scoring from close range on the half hour.

Halmosi created the second just before half-time when he crossed for Windass to tap in, with Folan heading the third in the 78th minute.

Late goals from Kim Do-Heon and James Morrison saved the day for West Bromwich after Grant Holt, a record £170,000 signing from Nottingham Forest, gave Shrewsbury a two-goal lead.

Holt stabbed home the opener four minutes after the break before converting Ben Davies' 65th-minute cross.
