Jol and Houllier are Newcastle back-up choices

Blackburn's Mark Hughes remains the favourite to be Newcastle's next manager, but chairman Chris Mort has started his worldwide search for an alternative and has checked out the availability of Martin Jol, Gerard Houllier, Louis van Gaal and Guus Hiddink.

Blackburn chairman John Williams last night insisted Rovers had not been contacted by Newcastle for permission to approach their former Wales boss, but Toon owner Mike Ashley returns from business in Hong Kong on Tuesday and will put the search for a manager at the top of his agenda.

Hughes is certain to be sounded out by Mort and Ashley, who sacked Sam Allardyce last week. Their hunt will extend to the Continent, however, and two managers who have worked in the Barclays Premier League would welcome a return to English management.

Former Tottenham boss Jol was linked with the Newcastle job before Allardyce's departure six days ago and the Dutchman is believed to have made the first contact with Mort through his advisers.

Houllier, the Liverpool manager from 1998 to 2004, has been interviewed by the FAI about the Republic of Ireland job, but has also been recommended to Newcastle by their former chairman Sir John Hall.

Houllier wants a return to day-to-day management in this country after quitting French champions Lyon last summer.
