Jol's insistence that Spurs can crack the top four this season already looks uncertain given the manner of their opening day defeat at Sunderland.

But as they kick off their White Hart Lane campaign against Everton tonight, Jol is sure his side will not repeat their run of one win in six at the start of the last campaign.

Jol said: "I feel we have invested wisely in good young players for the future. Gareth Bale is very young and Younes Kaboul is playing like a 25-year-old but he is only 21."

Bale is still out nursing a thigh injury but Jol has clearly put a lot of faith in Kaboul, who became the Premier League's third most expensive uncapped player when he signed for £8million in the summer.

Kaboul was the only Spurs new boy to start against Roy Keane's men and he turned in an assured performance which underlined the faith Jol has in him.

Jol said: "Kaboul has proved to me he is a quality player and it is certainly a wake-up call for him because he proved he can play well at the back and it doesn't mean anything.

"We have got to prepare him. We've warned him what to expect and until now he is doing well.

"He is strong, quick and good in the air. He is a very good asset and I feel there will be no problem with him."

Jol will give a late fitness test to Michael Dawson who was ruled out of the trip to the north-east with a sprained ankle. He is also set to hand £16.5million striker Darren Bent his first start.

Jol added: "We had a bad start last season and we lost to Bolton on the opening day but we picked ourselves up and that is what we have got to do again now.

"We have got to do better in midfield, up front and from the flanks as well.

"If you get a good start you have a very good foundation and you can build on that. Last year we had six new players in the line-up and it was different and we needed some time."
