Jol: We hit new low at Newcastle

Martin Jol admitted today that his team had put on their worst performance of the season at Newcastle on Monday night but was confident they would turn things around against Getafe.

Tottenham take on the Spanish club in the first of their UEFA Cup group stage matches at White Hart Lane tomorrow night with team spirit at rock-bottom after their 3-1 defeat on Tyneside.

But Jol said: "On Monday, we probably played our worst game since the beginning of the season after putting together a run that saw us unbeaten in six games.

"We have scored 26 goals so far this season so our position is not down to our attacking quality, it is just that the goals we are conceding are avoidable.

"Our players are fighters and good characters and we will address this - we will do better because we have to."

The Tottenham players are understood to have been affected by the constant speculation over Jol's future and are unsure if he is staying or going.

The Dutchman's handling of strikers Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe has also given cause for concern but Jol is certain his players will respond.

"We have got ourselves into this position and we have to get out of it," he told tottenhamhotspur.com.

"We have done it in the past and it is a matter of trust, but the players have to do better and they know that.

"You have to do the right things and I know we have got very good players here to do just that and get us out of a position we shouldn't be in."
