Jol: We're fighters and we'll do better - we have to

Tottenham manager Martin Jol has admitted that the defensive mistakes that have cost Spurs so dear over recent weeks have got to stop.

And he believes it is the team as a whole that needs to step up to the plate and that individual errors can't be blamed.

Jol's future was discussed again by chairman Daniel Levy and other senior directors yesterday afternoon following the dismal 3-1 defeat at Newcastle — their fifth in 10 games.

But Levy is still yet to find any adequate replacements who are available to come in immediately on a either a permanent or temporary basis.

After Tottenham host Blackburn on Sunday, the board feel the run-in to the end of the year offers enough winnable games to take Spurs clear of the relegation zone.

Jol told the club's official website: "We have scored 26 goals so far this season so our position is not down to our attacking quality, it is just that the goals we are conceding are avoidable. Our players are fighters and good characters and we will address this - we will do better because we have to.

"It is a case of having to grind out the results at this stage while leaving out the mistakes. I know we keep talking about mistakes each week, but it is not about confidence. We have got ourselves in a position and we have to get out of it.

"We have done it in the past and it is a matter of trust, but the players have to do better and they know that. You have to do the right things and I know we have got very good players here to do just that and get us out of a position we shouldn't be in.

"We need to be a solid team that keeps clean sheets and everybody is involved in that aim."
