Delight: Ryan Jones lifts the Triple Crown Shield
The 26-year-old has been in his high-profile, high-pressure job less than two months, but he has already learned the art of making himself heardonly when the situation demands it. So, before the host nation take on France at the Millennium Stadium, with a Grand Slam and RBS Six Nations title at stake, Jones will assess the atmosphere before deciding whether to calmly address the players.
"I don't prepare speeches, because you've got to judge the mood," he said. "Warren, Shaun and Rob (coaches) will have a lot to say. There's no point me just repeating what they've said.
"When I speak it's not planned, it's more from the heart, off the cuff, instinctive. It is going to be a difficult day but I don't think it's a day for words, it's a day for actions. No words can get us through, we just have to make sure we're physically and mentally ready. It's never going to be a case of motivating guys at a time like this. There is no point shouting and screaming and bouncing off the walls, because that won't do anyone any good. You have to keep a certain composure and focus, so that you can be clinical.
Jones insists that nobody should be taken aback by what Wales have achieved, because of the talent in the squad, the form of key individuals and the exploits of two regions — his Ospreys and Cardiff — in the Heineken Cup.
"When we came together, there was a belief and buzz," he said. "Yes, the World Cup was a disappointment, but you can't dwell on things like that. Because of the way the regions were playing and the fact that a lot of the players were in good form, we really felt a sense of expectation and confidence. 'We set our sights high and we're on the verge of a special achievement.
"It is always a shock because you take nothing for granted. You work your hardest and set a target of where you'd like to be. We've got there. I always believed we could do well in this competition."
