Jose won't stop Sheva's exit

Jose Mourinho on Monday night opened the door for Andriy Shevchenko to quit Stamford Bridge at the end of a troubled first season at Chelsea.

Mourinho said: "Hopefully he's not happy with the season he has given us. He's a Chelsea player and he has a contract, but if he's not happy and wants to try everything for us, it's up to him."

The Stamford Bridge boss has stepped up his bid to sign Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid now that owner Roman Abramovich has reluctantly agreed to sell Shevchenko, if Chelsea can find a buyer who can match his £130,000-a-week salary.

The Ukraine striker has scored just 14 goals for Chelsea and will miss Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United following surgery on a groin injury he underwent after dramatically withdrawing from the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.

He joined the rest of the Chelsea squad on their lap of honour around Stamford Bridge following their 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday, but his relationship with Mourinho remains strained.

Mourinho will make a number of changes this summer, starting with the capture of Reading midfielder Steven Sidwell on a free transfer.

Mourinho added: "It's obvious we need a couple of players — two or three. It's the nature of a team like us to try and improve, but I don't think we'll be involved in big transfers and big changes.

"Of course we need a central defender and a midfielder to make the group stronger, especially as we lose Mikel John Obi and Michael Essien to the African Nations Cup."
