1839: The Henley Regatta, now established as British rowing's showpiece event, took place for the first time.  

1982: Italy opened their World Cup campaign in Spain with a goalless draw against Poland. They went on to win the competition, later beating Poland 2-0 in the semi-finals.

2002: Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup after losing 1-0 to co-hosts South Korea.  

2003: David Beckham was awarded an OBE.  

2007: Joey Barton completed his move to Newcastle from Manchester City for £5.8million. .
