1846: The first official baseball match took place at Elysian Fields, Hoboken,
New York. New York Nine beat the Knickerbocker Club 23-1.
1903: English cricket great Wally Hammond was born. He played for his country
85 times between 1927 and 1947 and scored a then Test record aggregate of 7,249
runs. Hammond also made a then record 336 not out against New Zealand at
Auckland in 1933 and hit 50,511 first-class runs. He died in July 1965.
Tiger Woods will sit out the rest of the golf season as a result of the upcoming reconstructive surgery on his knee
1978: Ian Botham became the first man to score a century and take eight wickets
(eight for 34) in a Test match innings, against Pakistan for England at Lord's.
2000: Tiger Woods won the US Open at Pebble Beach, finishing on a 12-under-par
272 with a lead of 15 strokes, the biggest win in any major in history and also
the lowest total in the history of the tournament.
2003: The PFA made a £40,000 legal and compensation payment after wrongfully
dismissing former chairman Barry Horne.
2006: Celtic signed Chelsea midfielder Jiri Jarosik on a three-year contract.
2007: England defeated West Indies by seven wickets in the fourth and final
npower Test at Chester-le-Street to complete a 3-0 series success.
