Kauto Star suffers another defeat as Our Vic triumphs at Aintree

Kauto Star, dethroned last month as Cheltenham Gold Cup champion by stable companion Denman, was beaten again. In a thrilling battle for the Aintree Bowl at Liverpool, Kauto Star, the 4-7 favourite ridden by Ruby Walsh, was caught on the line by 9-1 chance Our Vic, the mount of Timmy Murphy, and lost by a nose.

Kauto Star made jumping errors during the 5km chase but held a three-length lead from the last fence only to be denied in the shadow of the winning post.

The favourite's trainer Paul Nicholls was inclined to blame himself after the horse went to the front earlier than usual.

He told the BBC: "I just said (to jockey Walsh) ride him like he stays and be positive and kick on in the straight if you want to.

"He didn't agree with me on the day, but he's run a good race. All credit to Our Vic, he's run a good race too and the best horse on the day won."

Winning trainer David Pipe said: "Both horses deserved to win."

Bookmakers have eased Kauto Star in the betting for the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup to 7-1. Denman is the even money favourite. Thursday's race was the highlight of the three-day Aintree Festival which culminates with the Grand National on Saturday, won last year by 33-1 chance Silver Birch.
