When Kaymer followed up his victory in this season's Abu Dhabi Championship by becoming the first German in 20 years to win the BMW International Open on home soil in Munich, his mother was seriously ill and he made an emotional dedication at the prize-giving, telling her: "This was for you."

Following her death he pulled out of last week's Barclays Scottish Open but the 23-year-old, on course for a Ryder Cup debut in September, has turned up at Royal Birkdale.

He said: "I definitely know there will be someone special looking down on me this week.

"This is such a great tournament and I didn't want to miss it. I know my mother would not want me to miss it, either."
