Keane closes on £6m Baines

Sunderland boss Roy Keane is close to signing one of his top targets after he was finally given permission to talk to Wigan defender Leighton Baines.

The full back has been a priority for Keane throughout the close season and the clubs have agreed a fee of around £6million, which will hinder Everton's plans to make a move for him.

Keane to talk: Leighton Baines

Keane, in Portugal at his club's three-day training camp, hopes to have England Under 21 defender Baines in his squad for the three-game tour of the Republic of Ireland which starts on Saturday with a game against Bohemians in Dublin. Sunderland will also play in Cork, Keane's home town, and finish next week against Galway United.

The player has privately expressed a strong interest in boyhood club Everton, but their priority is Manchester United's Alan Smith and that has slowed down any Baines move, leaving the door open for Keane.

The capture of Baines would take Sunderland's summer spending to £20m, the biggest spree the club have ever undertaken.

Keane still hopes to land a goalkeeper and refuses to give up on Hearts' Craig Gordon. The manager last week tabled a £9m bid with the Edinburgh club for the Scotland No 1.
