Keane sees more hard work ahead for Sunderland

As his former team-mates at Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Ireland and even Cobh Ramblers will testify, Roy Keane did not know the meaning of taking it easy in training.

It was no surprise that when he visited Sunderland's training ground last week, even Stuart Pearce found the level of first-team workouts 'very intense'.

Late leveller: Kenwyne Jones

"Not too intense," Keane was eager to point out, but it is an issue he will address before his side visit Manchester City next Monday and then contemplate the derby at home to Newcastle.

For the first time, a Keane side were booed off at the Stadium of Light. "No problem with that," he said. "I'd have booed us." They were fortunate to be just one goal down against the only side they defeated at home when they were relegated two years ago and who have still not won away for more than a year.

The Sunderland boss wilfully offered the theory that his own training methods were behind the worst 45 minutes Sunderland have played under him, so the observations of his former Forest team-mate and England Under-21 manager Pearce had clearly struck a chord.

Keane said: "I'd hate my players to walk through training, but it's something I'm prepared to look at. If someone you trust says they've not seen that level of intensity at other clubs then I have to.

"We have to train properly, but maybe for shorter periods."

Simon Davies's long distance free-kick embarrassed Craig Gordon to give Fulham a 32ndminute lead but Kenwyne Jones finally got a decisive touch to Grant Leadbitter's cross to equalise with four minutes left.
