Keane to escape punishment over his angry reaction to Ramos substitution

Robbie Keane will escape punishment despite his angry reaction to being substituted in Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City yesterday.

The striker was infuriated by manager Juande Ramos's decision to replace him for the seventh time in eight games midway through the second half, with the match poised at 1-1.

I can't believe it: Keane holds his head in his hands after he is taken off by Ramos

Keane's response was to toss a tracksuit top across the dug-out when he had finally dragged himself from the Eastlands pitch.

The manager's decision was curious given Keane's first-half goal — his 21st of the season — and his all-round display that marked him out as Tottenham's outstanding player.

But Ramos said: "I didn't see him throw a tracksuit down, but I think it's normal.

"Players want to play and they are disappointed when they are replaced. But it's football and we have got a squad.

"We have people on the bench and we need to share the minutes out between the players who are available.

"They need to get minutes under their belt and I feel that from time to time you need to give players a rest when they have played a lot of minutes themselves.

"I took Aaron Lennon off for the same reason I took off Robbie Keane.

"Some players need time on the pitch and others who have played a lot recently need a break. That's how it works."

Coach Gus Poyet added: "We will have a look but I don't think there will be any action. It just shows he wants to stay on the pitch. That is good character and that is the kind of characters we want in this club."
