Keane wants Tottenham's Darren Bent to step in for injured Kenwyne Jones

Sunderland manager Roy Keane is ready to step up his interest in Tottenham's Darren Bent after learning Kenwyne Jones could be sidelined for up to nine months with a knee injury.

Jones will leave a huge hole in Sunderland's forward line next season, and Bent figures high on Keane's list of possible replacements.

He has £50m at his disposal and is prepared to bid around £12m for a player who cost Spurs £4.5m more than that 12 months ago.

Keane however knows it will be difficult to persuade Tottenham to accept such a loss and tempt the player north, with Dimitar Berbatov's  future once more in doubt.

North east rivals Newcastle meanwhile have been rebuffed in a £2m move for Bent's White Hart Lane team-mate Pascal Chimbonda.

The former Wigan defender has been a long-term target of Kevin Keegan who needs a new right-back.
