Keane will not quit the Stadium of Light after midweek Carling Cup horror show

Sunderland boss Roy Keane did not cut a happy figure during his side's narrow Carling Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Northampton in midweek

Raging towards a dug-out is not the most intelligent act at the best of times.

When Roy Keane is lurking, it is positively crazy.

Keane has insisted that he will not be walking away from .

After his row with a handful of fans following their woeful Carling Cup win against Northampton, his future had been called into question.

However, as his side face up to Aston Villa, he warned: ‘I wasn’t happy with it.

"It happened twice last year and we’re talking about two or three fans, not two or three thousand.

'I don’t like people making an effort to come down the dug-out to do it, that shouldn’t happen at any club.

'I won’t tolerate it and maybe we should employ more stewards.

‘I went looking for him but he ran away pretty quickly.

'The next time a punter comes down I will tell him where to go.

'Every club has one or two and I don’t want these idiots tarred with the rest of our brilliant supporters.

‘I want a level of respect. Abuse should not be personal.

'Certainly not when people are coming down and walking towards the dug-out.

'I don’t think I deserve that, maybe if we were 10 points adrift at the bottom I would say: “He has got a good point there”, but not when I feel we are making good progress.’

Keane, who dubbed the midweek 2-2 draw and penalty shoot-out one of the worst nights of his career, admitted he was deliberately prepared to ‘stir things up’ to get a reaction from his players and supporters.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn is still hoping to tie Keane to a new five-year deal and both men say this week’s events will have no effect on their talks.

Keane said: ‘Why would I walk away from this club?

'There is absolutely no chance.

'If I am not happy I like to stir things up and get a reaction.

‘I did not come here to be liked and popular.

'I came here to do a job.

'I am involved because I love the game and I love winning and if I get people out of their comfort zone I will do it .’
