Keep out Ron - Madrid's stars speak out over the Real deal

Cristiano Ronaldo was last night handed a dramatic snub after it was claimed that Real Madrid are better off without the Manchester United winger.

It was also alleged that his possible £200,000-a-week wages would spark a dressing-room revolt at the Bernabeu.

The outburst came from Real's Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder, one of several players to have been touted as a makeweight in the world record deal to prise Ronaldo away from Old Trafford.

Sneijder warned that the astronomical pay deal being used as bait to lure Ronaldo to Spain will cause resentment among the club's other star players, saying: 'It would be bad for the dressing room if he gets a much higher salary than the rest of the squad.

'It's not important to me, but I know other team-mates wouldn't like that at all. Here we have footballers like him, for example Arjen Robben or Robinho.

'It's obvious that I want to play with Cristiano but you also have to maintain the equilibrium in the dressing room.

'At the moment, no one can say anything about him because talking well about him also shows a slight lack of respect to the players that are here and this Real Madrid side has a lot of people of quality.'

Sneijder believes Robinho is just as good as Ronaldo and urged Real to put greater importance on keeping the Brazilian striker out of Chelsea's clutches than persuading United to bank an expected £80m by selling their prize asset.

United are steadfastly refusing to entertain that possibility but Robinho has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea under his former Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, with Real president Ramon Calderon boldly claiming the 24-year-old forward is worth in excess of £45m earlier this week.

However, Sneijder believes the Spanish champions should stick with the current squad and not blow their entire transfer budget on a player he claims can struggle to make an impact in big games.

'I hope Robinho stays at Madrid because I think he is equal to Cristiano Ronaldo,' added the former Ajax player.

'People have criticised Robinho because he hasn't performed in the big matches, but I saw important matches for Manchester United and Cristiano didn't perform either.

'It's not a criticism. I just want to point out that a player can't be at the same level all season. For me, this Madrid side do not need new signings. This squad is strong enough and this season we are going to do more.

'It's also obvious that if you bring in a player of a lot of quality it can be better for the team. In that case the only one thing I think we need is to sign a striker.'

Ronaldo's Portugal team-mate Jose Bosingwa gave nothing away about the winger's future when he was unveiled by Chelsea yesterday.

The £16.5m right-back from FC Porto said: 'Cristiano is an adult who can make his own decisions and it's down to him really.

'We did speak about football in England, a different kind of league which is very competitive and you have to work very hard on the pitch for the whole game. It's good for the game in England to have him here but it's not my decision.'
