Keeper rescues misfiring Ipswich

Neil Alexander was Ipswich's hero, saving a Steven MacLean penalty in a game that the home side should have won and left Jim Magilton's side with just six points from the last six matches.

Alexander flung himself to his left to turn away MacLean's spot kick after Dan Harding was penalised for a handball just after the hour mark.

It would have been a harsh defeat for the home side, who missed the opportunity to get back in the play-off places.

Ipswich's shooting was woeful in the first half and it was easy to see why they have been chasing Plymouth midfielder David Norris, who was left out of the visiting team.

Daniel Haynes had the best opportunity of the half, but shot high and wide from 10 yards out.

Pablo Counago had a good chance to put Ipswich ahead when the crafty Owen Garvan threaded the ball into his path, only for the forward to shoot wide.

Counago had a chance to atone for his earlier miss when he was put through by Jonathan Walters, only to shoot wide for a second time.

Plymouth's luck held early in the second half when Peter Halmosi and Gary Sawyer cleared off the line to deny Alex Bruce and De Vos.

Leading scorer Counago was through again moments later – his lob brilliantly tipped away by Luke McCormick.
