Khan quits as Pakistan chairman

Shaharyar Khan has resigned as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Shaharyar's offer to stand down was announced by a Pakistan government senior official and the PCB's director of cricket operations Saleem Altaf later revealed it had been accepted.

According to Altaf, Dr Naseem Ashraf Ghani is expected to be named Shaharyar's successor.

The announcement comes at the end of another turbulent week for Pakistani cricket. On Thursday, Younis Khan rejected the captaincy for the ICC Champions Trophy with the role eventually going to Mohammad Yousuf.

Younis was appointed after regular captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was handed a four-match one-day international ban for leading a protest against allegations of ball-tampering during the final Test against England at The Oval in August.

At the time, Yousuf was named as vice-captain. However, he was promoted after Younis announced he did not want to lead the team under such circumstances.

Shaharyar, a lifelong diplomat and former foreign secretary of Pakistan, took over the post as chairman in December 2003.
