Khan reckons its four fights until a world title as he withdraws from Thaxton bidding

Amir Khan says he can be world lightweight champion within four fights if he sees off WBO No 2 Dane Martin Kristjansen at London's ExCel Arena on February 2.

Khan, ranked WBO No 4, is desperate to do it while he is still 21 and he said: 'Get this one out of the way and I'll need just three more.

'I did say I'd be world champion in five fights before I faced Graham Earl last time so it's going right for me.

'I'd still love to fight for the British title and I thought this next fight would be Jon Thaxton so I could shut him up. But it's your promoter who gets you the fights.'

Purse bids for a fight between Khan and British champion Thaxton will be opened today by the British Boxing Board of Control.

Promoter Frank Warren insists he hasn't bid and if Khan doesn't fight the Norwich boxer, as he wants to in April, he could be stripped of his Commonwealth crown.

But Warren doubts the BBBC will do it.

'Thaxton has priced himself completely out of the market,' he said. 'He's not a £300,000 fighter — heavyweights don't get that.

'He's never earned £300,000 in his whole career and I bet he's not earned £100,000 in his last 10 fights.'

Thaxton thought Khan would fight him, not Kristjansen, next month and he said scornfully: 'Be a man or my name for you is the Bolton Bottler.'

Meanwhile, Khan's £1million gym will be opened tomorrow by Tory leader David Cameron. Khan has put £800,000 of his own money into the gym in the Halliwell district of Bolton.
