Kightly recovery gives Wolves boss McCarthy a boost after derby defeat

Mick McCarthy has delivered some good news for Wolves fans in the wake of Tuesday's disappointing derby defeat to West Brom.

The Molineux master has not ruled out involvement for long-term injury victim Michael Kightly before the end of the season

Kightly has been suffering with an ankle problem and has been sorely missed by his team this term.

But he came through a practice match against Crewe and the former Republic of Ireland boss has not ruled out a return ahead of this weekend's crunch play-off decider against Ipswich Town.

McCarthy said: "Although Karl Henry is unlikely to be involved, Michael Kightly was involved for 65-70 minutes. And Stephen Ward also played. "We shall see about Saturday for Michael. We shall see, probably on Thursday, a decision will be made."

Despite the slither of good news, McCarthy was less-than-happy with the outcome of the Black Country derby at Molineux.

"I didn't think it was a particularly fair result," he added. "They took the chance that mattered.

"I thought the game was a terrific football match. Both teams going for it. They had good chances, we had good chances. I'm immensely proud of the way we played, the players gave every last drop. I thought we could have got something out of it.

"It could have been 4-4 as 1-0. I'm delighted with the way we played but no-one's interested in that when we have lost to West Bromwich Albion.

"We have lost to West Brom. We can't do anything about that now. We can do something about Saturday. I think we can go into that game against Ipswich quite buoyant because of the way we have played.

"I'm bullish about Saturday because of the way we have played. People seem to think that confidence and ability comes and goes with one performance. I'm not sure about that. We shall have to wait and see."
