King of the Lane can't wait to see those Spurs strikers firing

Ledley King has revealed his frustration at missing the start of the season but the Tottenham skipper believes he will be watching one of the most potent strikeforces in the world from the sidelines.

King has not set a date for his return following knee surgery but it is expected to be the end of September before he can help Spurs in their bid to break into the top four of the Barclays Premier League.

While King's injury leaves Spurs short in defence, Darren Bent has bolstered an attack that scored more than 60 goals last season through Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.

"To have four strikers of the ability we have is something that not many clubs probably in the world will have in their team," said King.

"We are very lucky in that department and the good thing is they are all different. The only thing similar about them is that they can all score goals.

"Whoever plays will be doing their best for the team and with the team spirit we've got it's not going to be anything personal, everyone has to get along and do their bit for the team."

King has endured a frustrating last 15 months, missing the World Cup with a metatarsal injury and then having the start of last season delayed by knee surgery.

There were more foot problems in the last campaign and he went under the knife in June to repair a tear to his cartilage aggravated while on England duty.

"Every player wants to play football," said the 26-year-old.

"It has been disappointing but there's nothing I can do about that apart from work hard at getting back and helping the team as much as I can do. That's all I'm working on but there is no date."

With Arsenal losing Thierry Henry to Barcelona, this campaign is seen as Spurs' chance to break into the Champions League places, particularly given their investment in the squad over the summer.

Bent has been joined by left-back Gareth Bale, centre-back Younes Kaboul and midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng as the club's major signings and it is understood that West Brom's Curtis Davies would prefer Spurs as a destination despite Aston Villa's interest.

It has prompted expectations of competing in the top four, with King adding: "We finished fifth in the last two seasons and the natural progression is to finish in the top four. If we don't do it we'll be disappointed.

"Our squad is capable of doing it. Last season we finished fifth and still didn't do too well away from home. If we are going to get into the top four that will have to improve."

King was speaking at the launch of the Premier League's Creating Chances programme which highlighted some of the community projects and charity work of football.

He has played his role helping youngsters in the club's area - but strictly Spurs fans.

"The Arsenal supporters give me a bit of banter and I try to give it back, hopefully next season I can give a bit more back," he said.
