Kingsgate Native by far the Best as he produces 33-1 Golden Jubilee shock

John Best's sprinter could only finish 10th on his seasonal debut in the King's Stand Stakes on Tuesday, but obviously benefited for the run.

The 33-1 shot, ridden by Seb Sanders, denied War Artist (8-1) by a length a quarter, with Sir Gerry (20-1) three-quarters of a length away in third.

The runners were spread across the course with Fat Boy taking them along on the far side and Australian speedster Takeover Target, the winner two years ago, in front towards the near side.  

New Zealand raider Seachange and War Artist took closer order at halfway but a furlong out the race appeared to be between Kingsgate Native, Takeover Target and War Artist.  

Although the latter got the measure of Takeover Target, it was Kingsgate Native who stayed on the stronger to land his second Group One after the Nunthorpe Stakes he won last August as a two-year-old.

Best, who saddled 100-1 shocker Flashmans Papers on the opening afternoon, said: 't means so much to the yard to have winners, and to have winners here is the ultimate.  

'Everyone has worked so hard at home and it's so good to do it on the day.  

'I thought 33-1 was a crazy price for him. He won the Nunthorpe last year and shouldn't have been anywhere near that price. 

'He ran with the choke out a little bit earlier in the week. He's done a good job to come back so quickly. He's very relaxed and has done little at home since. He's been sat on once and apart from that he's been out in the field.  

'The problem we had was that last year he was a very mature two-year-old and I felt that the weight for age allowance was in his favour as a two-year-old. I wasn't sure whether that would translate as a three-year-old.'

Sanders said: 'He was a bit keen early and it just took me a while to get him into his rhythm and settle him. He carried me very easily to the two-pole and it was just a case of getting past those hardened horses in front. 

'He knuckled down and picked up really well, he's given me a terrific ride throughout. He's going to be a star sprinter for a while.'

James Eustace, trainer of War Artist, said: 'He has run very well and Kerrin (McEvoy) gave him a great ride and tracked the right horse (Takeover Target).

'I was delighted to be drawn in stall one and I was even more delighted when Takeover Target was drawn near us as he is always thereabouts in these races.

'He followed him through and it nearly paid off. But full credit to John Best for winning with a three-year-old.  

'We will go to the July Cup next and then give serious thought to the Global Sprint Challenge.'
